The United States has issued a worldwide travel alert for its citizens warning of the possibility of terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violence against US citizens.

The warning comes amid increased tensions in several parts of the world, most notably in the Middle East.

Numerous protests have been held around the world demonstrating against the United States’ support for Israel.

The warning issued by the US State Department urges citizens to “stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.”

The US last issued a worldwide travel alert in 2022 following the killing of Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Officials had already raised the travel alert for Israel and Lebanon to the highest levels.

Australia has now also upgraded its travel advice for Lebanon.

DFAT warns Australians not to travel to Lebanon “due to the volatile security situation and the risk of the security situation deteriorating further.”

“If you’re in Lebanon and wish to leave, you should depart through the first available commercial option as soon as you’re able to do so. Airports may pause operations with little notice due to heightened security concerns. “
