Kamala Harris admits the US Presidential election result is ‘not what we wanted’ after formally conceding defeat to Donald Trump.
Harris addressed thousands of supporters in Washington DC on Wednesday afternoon US time after opting not to front crowds on election night.
She told the crowd she accepts the decision of the American people.
“Now, I know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now. I get it. But we must accept the results of this election, “Harris said.
“Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. I also told him that we will help him and his team with the transition and we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.”
The result is a devastating blow to Harris and the Democrats.
The Vice-President lost the swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin and trails in Nevada and Arizona.
She also lost the popular vote while the Democrats have lost control of the Senate.
Harris urged people to continue the fight.
“To everyone who is watching, do not despair. This is not a time to throw up our hands. This is a time to roll up our sleeves.
This is a time to organise, to mobilise, and to stay engaged for the sake of freedom and justice, and the future that we all know we can build together.”
