Motorists heading over the border into NSW are being warned of major delays due to an unfolding police incident.

Police have confirmed a body has been found on the roadway, sparking a major emergency response.

“Emergency services were called to the M1, near Tweed Valley Way, Chinderah, about 5.30am today after a body was located on the roadway,” NSW police said.

“The man is yet to be formally identified.

“Officers attached to Tweed/ Byron Police District have established a crime scene and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced.”

All southbound lanes of the M1 have been closed, with vehicles currently being diverted via Tweed Valley Way and Clothiers Road.

“This diversion is suitable for light vehicles only,” Live Traffic NSW said.

“Heavy vehicles are being parked”.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area, with lengthy delays expected.
