LATEST @ 4.10PM | A man has died after being hit by a truck on the M1 in the Tweed region.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was struck in the northbound lanes in Chinderah about 11.30am.

Despite the efforts by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, he died on his way to hospital.

The male driver of the truck stopped to assist the man and has since been taken to Tweed Heads Hospital for mandatory testing.

“Police from Tweed-Byron Police District attended the scene and have commenced and investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident,” a NSW Police statement reads.

“As inquiries continue, anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Traffic diversions remain in place for cars via Tumbulgum for the M1 northbound and Tweed Valley Way.

This diversion is not suitable for heavy-vehicle with trucks being held on-site.

EARLIER @ 12.35PM | A pedestrian has been hit by a car on the M1 causing massive delays for motorists in the Tweed region.

All northbound lanes have been closed at Tweed Valley Way in Chinderah following the incident around 11.30am.

Vehicles are being diverted south onto Tweed Valley Way, then north onto Terranora Road to rejoin the M1.

Heavy vehicles are being held on site.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area as emergency crew respond.

The condition of the pedestrian and motorists are not yet known.
