Australian soap Neighbours will be officially axed after nearly four decades on our TV screens.

The iconic show has brought the fictional family drama of Ramsay Street into Aussie homes with nearly 9000 episodes.

It’s also kick-started the careers of stars such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Delta Goodrem, Liam Hemsworth, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Natalie Imbruglia.

A post to Neighbours Twitter account confirmed the news, stating a lack of funding as the cause.

“Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show.

“To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.”

A petition signed by over 62,000 dedicated fans pleading with UK’s Channel 5 to keep the show on-air was unfortunately not enough to save it.

Production of the show will stop in June.

There are reports that many of the show’s iconic actors including Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan have been asked to return to the show to ensure it goes out on a high.
