Panthers young gun Taylan May has been charged with assault over an alleged altercation in a South East Queensland nightclub.
The alleged incident is understood to have occurred in the Maroochydore nightclub precinct on the Sunshine Coast just days after the NRL grand final last year.
According to reports, May was allegedly sticking up for teammates when he allegedly dragged a member of the public to the ground.
“A 20-year-old man from NSW has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
“He will appear in Caloundra Magistrates Court on May 18 in relation to an incident on October 8.”
The club confirmed in a statement overnight that the incident was immediately referred to the NRL’s integrity unit last year.
“The club was made aware of the incident at the time, informed the NRL Integrity Unit and undertook an investigation into the matter,” the club said.
“The club subsequently implemented disciplinary measures against May, while giving fair consideration to the circumstances of the incident, and deemed the matter finalised.
Despite the charge, May has been given the green light to continue playing in the NRL.
“The NRL has not imposed any disciplinary measures against May, therefore he is eligible for NRL selection,” the club said.
“As the matter is now before the courts, the club will make no further comment until those proceedings have concluded.”
