The Commonwealth Games could be making a return to Australia in 2026, this time to Melbourne.
The Commonwealth Games Federation has reportedly asked the Victorian Government to consider hosting the 2026 event in Melbourne.
Birmingham was initially interested in hosting the games in 2026, but stepped in to take on the 2022 event when Durban was stripped of hosting rights due to funding issues.
A “senior Victorian government official” has confirmed the state is actively considering the idea, with feasibility studies underway.
“We’re looking at a 2026 Games, but we’ve made no commitment,” a source told The Age.
Australia has hosted the Commonwealth Games five times including Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982, Melbourne in 2006 and the Gold Coast in 2018.
