A horror crash in Townsville in the early hours of this morning has sadly claimed the life of a 23-year-old man.

According to police, a VW Golf was travelling along Ring Road just before 1.00am when it left the roadway, crashing through a fence before coming to a stop in bushland.

The driver and passenger were trapped in the vehicle for a period of time before being freed by emergency crews.

Despite desperate attempts by paramedics, the passenger, a 23-year-old man, died at the scene.

The driver, a 25-year-old man, was rushed to Townsville Hospital in a serious condition.

Investigators from the Forensic Crash Unit are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with relevant dash cam footage, to come forward.
