The State’s youth crime crisis is back in the spotlight after a 17-year-old boy was charged with the stabbing murder of a 43-year-old man in Brisbane.
The man’s body was found by a member of the public along Newmarket Road in Wilston just before 2am on Sunday.
Two juveniles, a boy and girl, were located a short time later and taken into custody.
Following investigations, a 17-year-old Burpengary boy was charged with murder.
Police say he will be kept in custody to face the Brisbane Children’s Court at a later date.
A 17-year-old Keperra girl was also charged with one count of assault police and was also denied police bail to appear before Brisbane Children’s Court at a later date.
“This is indeed a tragic incident,” Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said.
“This man was killed less than a kilometre from his home.”
The motive for the fatal attack remains unclear as investigations continue.
“The circumstances are not clear in terms of what led up to it,” Det Supt Massingham said.
“Whether it was a robbery or whether it was a disagreement in relation to something else, we simply don’t know.”
The State Opposition has called on the Queensland Government to recall State Parliament early to address the youth crime crisis.
“The Premier’s first job when she returns to work tomorrow must be recalling Parliament to deal with the crime epidemic gripping our state,” LNP Leader David Crisafulli said.
“Queenslanders have had enough.
“We’re living through a crime epidemic because the Palaszczuk Government watered down the laws”.
