It looks like Queensland has a new Premier, with reports emerging that Steven Miles has won the race to become the Sunshine State’s new leader.

Meetings were held late last night to try and work out who will take over from Annastacia Palaszczuk after both Miles and Health Minister Shannon Fentiman put up their hands.

However, it’s understood a decision was made after a deal was brokered between union heavyweights and the Labor Party’s right faction, who have teamed up to support Miles.

Treasurer Cameron Dick will reportedly take on the role as Deputy Premier.

A formal ballot is still planned for Friday, where Miles will be voted in uncontested after Ms Fentiman officially pulled out of the race on Tuesday morning.

“It is clear that a majority of Labor Members of Parliament will support Steven Miles to be the next leader of the Labor Party, and therefore the next Premier of Queensland,” Ms Fentiman said in a statement a short time ago.

“As a result, I will not be standing as a candidate for the Labor leadership when Caucus meets on Friday.

“I want to congratulate Steven and offer my support in the work ahead.”

It comes just days after Annastacia Palaszcuk sensationally announced she would be retiring from politics after more than eight years in the State’s top job.
