LATEST @ 1.00 PM | Steven Miles has officially taken the reigns from Annastacia Palaszczuk after being sworn in as the 40th Premier of Queensland.

It comes after Mr Miles was elected unopposed as the new Labor leader by his colleagues at a caucus meeting on Friday morning.

Treasurer Cameron Dick was elected as his Deputy.

Following the vote, the pair travelled to Queensland’s Government House where they were formally sworn in by Governor Jeannette Young.

In his first press conference since being elevated to the top job, Mr Miles said he wanted to Govern for all Queenslanders.

“Ultimately, I’m a suburban Queensland dad with three kids, and so many Queenslanders are like me, and I want to demonstrate to them that I understand what concerns them in their day-to-day lives and how government can help them,” the Premier said.

The State Government’s frontbench has also undergone its largest shake-up in nine years, with five new Ministers elevated to Cabinet.

“They are younger, they are energetic, they are ready to deliver a fresh approach for Queenslanders,” Mr Miles said.

Meantime, Mr Dick described his appointment as Deputy Premier as a “great honour”.

“We have a great opportunity to build on the legacy of Annastacia Palaszczuk and the very great work that she did serving the people of Queensland,” he said.

Queensland’s new Premier is expected to deliver a formal speech later this afternoon.

Treasurer Cameron Dick will be voted in as Deputy Premier before the pair are officially sworn in at Queensland Government House on Friday afternoon.

Minister Miles will then deliver his first major speech, where he’s expected to outline his goals for the State Government’s future.

A major cabinet reshuffle could also be on the cards today, with several major portfolios including Transport and Tourism up for grabs after Mark Bailey and Stirling Hinchcliffe opted to step aside.

It comes after Annastacia Palaszczuk officially wrapped up her time in the top job on Thursday, just days after announcing her shock resignation.
