Queensland has seen a slight drop in new COVID-19 cases today, with 9,404 infections detected.
That’s down from 9,730 cases across the state yesterday.
Sadly, the state’s COVID-19 death toll has also risen overnight, with eight deaths recorded in the past 24 hours.
Hospitalisations have also gone up, with 295 people now being treated for the virus in hospitals across the state, compared to 265 yesterday.
Of those, 19 are in intensive care.
There’s now 58,311 cases active in Queensland, with health officials warning the peak of the second Omicron wave will likely hit in mid-April.
Schools remain the biggest concern, with 1 in 50 school-aged children testing positive in the past week.
“We have always known from day one that kids are pretty robust with each other, always physical with each other, and are always going to be a greater risk in terms of transmission than adults,” Minister Mark Bailey told reporters on Saturday.
Mr Bailey admitted it’s no real surprise.
“We knew when school went back that there would be transmission happening, so whether that’s related to classroom air or playground activity”.
