The popular Howard Smith Wharves and Riverside Walkway in Brisbane’s CBD have been evacuated with a large construction crane on the loose in the river.
A pontoon carrying the crane broke free of its mooring earlier this afternoon and has since been floating freely up and down the river.
“Anyone at Howard Smith Wharves, including surrounding businesses and the riverside walkway, are to EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY,” police tweeted around 2pm.
“Locals are advised to avoid the area, and unless absolutely necessary, STAY HOME”.
The Story Bridge has also been closed, with fears the crane may crash into the iconic structure.
Polair is currently circling the area ordering people to evacuate as efforts continue to try and secure the crane.
