Parts of Queensland are bracing for even more wild weather with forecasters also warning of the possibility of another cyclone in the state’s north.

The Bureau is closely watching a monsoon trough that is expected to develop in the Gulf of Carpentaria later today.

The trough is forecast to become a tropical low next week bringing more heavy rain to parts of Far North Queensland.

Also soaked areas including Cairns, Cooktown and Innisfail are forecast to receive up to 240mm of rain over the next week.

There is also the slight chance that the low could then develop into a tropical cyclone.

“If it does form and it remains over water then as we head into the weekend its chance of intensifying into cyclone strength does go up from very low to low,” The Bureau’s Daniel Hayes said.

In the southeast, wild winds and high tides are expected to start hitting the coast from Friday and continue across the weekend.

A south-easterly wind surge is pushing up the coast, which will also trigger more showers and potential storms.

Showers are expected to linger on the Gold Coast for at least another week, however, daily rainfall figures are only expected to be in the single digits.
