A man has died in floodwaters in Queensland’s South Burnett region, following an overnight deluge.
Police have confirmed his body was recovered near Sandy Creek in Nanango, about 150km north of Toowoomba.
Investigators are working to identify who the person is.
QPS Inspector Scott Stahlhut says the region has experienced wild weather and a mass downpour.
“This area has been inundated with a significant amount of rainfall over the previous hours, with large rainfalls exceeding 100 mm which has caused some flash flooding in the area,” Inspector Stahlhut says.
“The areas impacted are in Nanango and Kingaroy and areas in between, predominantly.”
Record-breaking rainfall has been recorded in the area and throughout the whole state this year.
Flash flooding has resulted, to date this year, in the loss of 18 lives.
11 of those are road-related flood deaths.
Police say it’s a tragic but fresh reminder to always avoid flooded areas.
“Unfortunately, people are still driving into flood waters,”
“And unfortunately, people are still ignoring road signs to avoid flooded areas and still driving around road closed signs when there’s a significant risk to them.”
An investigation into exactly how this man got caught in flood waters is now underway.
