A 22-year-old man has died and an emergency alert has been issued as heavy rain and flooding continue in the Wide Bay and Burnett region of Queensland.

More than 600 millimetres of rain has fallen in parts since 9.00 am yesterday leading to multiple flood alerts overnight.

An emergency alert has now been issued for Maryborough, with the Mary River expected to exceed the major flood level of nine metres by tomorrow morning.

It means nearby properties could experience flooding and residents will have to evacuate to higher ground.

Meantime, police are investigating after a man was found dead in a car that had been carried off by floodwaters in Kanigan overnight.

The ute is understood to have been swept off Cherry Tree Road near the Bruce Highway into floodwaters around 7.30 pm.

“Following an extensive response involving police and fire and rescue swift water crews, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 22-year-old Sunshine Coast man, was located deceased inside the vehicle this morning,” Queensland Police reported this morning.
