Man dead after suffering snake bites south of Mackay

A man has died after being bitten by a snake while trying to rescue another man just south of Mackay.

The man in his 60s suffered multiple bites to his chest and arm as he attempted to remove the snake which was coiled around another mans ankle.

It happened in the town of Koumala at around 6.30pm Saturday night.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

The second male was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

It’s unclear at this stage what species of snake was involved.
