A new study has revealed that more cars have been stolen in Queensland than anywhere else in the country in the past year.
A comparison of police figures from across the country shows that between July 2021 and June 2022, 17,221 cars were recorded stolen in Queensland.
Around 2,500 of those were on the Gold Coast alone, accounting for 15 per cent of all stolen cars in Queensland.
Brisbane topped the list, with around 3600 vehicles stolen.
The State Opposition said it should serve as a wake-up call, with the alarming figures coming a year after the Queensland Government introduced its youth crime reforms.
“The Premier says crime is a problem across Australia. It is, but it is significantly worse in Queensland,” LNP Leader David Crisafulli said.
“Our state had the highest number of vehicles stolen despite our population being smaller than Victoria and New South Wales.”
It’s sparked fresh calls for breach of bail to be made an offence in Queensland, with a large number of vehicles stolen by youths.
“This is unacceptable… How many more Queenslanders will have their cars stolen before the Premier takes responsibility and starts listening to our solutions?” Crisafulli said.
“Enough is enough.”
