A drone carrying a stash of drugs has been found after crashing inside the grounds of a northern Queensland prison.

Officers at Townsville Correctional Centre spotted the drone during patrols on November 11.

It was carrying quantities of methylamphetamine, tobacco, and cannabis as well as 617 suboxone strips with a total value of approximately $250,000.

Police say the Mavic Pro Drone attempted to fly the drugs into prison, and believe it crashed around November 9.

A light-coloured utility was seen near the facility at the time of the incident.

General Manager of Townsville Correctional Complex Chief Superintendent Louise Kneeshaw says attempts to introduce drugs into correctional centres endangered the safety and security of prisoners and staff.

“With new laws set to come in, the act of flying a drone over a correctional centre can cost you time in custody,” Chief Superintendent Kneeshaw says.

“Our officers work tirelessly every day to the protect the safety of the community and this contraband find is a testament to that commitment and capability.”

Investigators have released vision of the light-coloured utility and are seeking assistance from the public for information regarding the drone flight or the vehicle.
