Five teenagers are dead and another has been taken to hospital following a horror ute crash south-west of Sydney.

Police said a Nissan Navara lost control before ploughing into a tree in Buxton, about 40 kilometres north-west of Wollongong, just before 8.00pm.

The driver, an 18-year-old, miraculously managed to survive.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to Liverpool Hospital for mandatory testing, however, no charges have been laid.

The five passengers, three girls aged 14 and 15, and two boys, aged 15 and 16, all died at the scene.

Superintendent Paul Fuller described the accident as one of the worst he had ever seen.

“It’s a horrific accident scene and a traumatic event like this will have a devastating impact on the families, friends and the local community,” Spt Fuller said.

“We believe a number of the children go to the local high school.

“We have spoken to the principal of the high school to facilitate some counselling at the school when the students arrive.”

A crime scene has since been established at the crash site, which is being examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage or information about this incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
