A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a church leader and several worshippers were stabbed during a shocking attack at a church in Sydney’s west.
The confronting scenes played out on the church’s live-stream, with hundreds of others witnessing the horror as it unfolded online.
According to police, the boy stabbed the Bishop and another clergyman in the middle of mass at the Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley just after 7pm on Monday.
Officers rushed to the scene and managed to take the teen into custody, but they were forced to barricade themselves inside the church as riots erupted outside.
The violent clashes saw police cars damaged and left two officers in hospital with serious injuries.
One constable was hit with a metal object and suffered a twisted knee and a chipped tooth, while another constable sustained a broken jaw after he was hit with a brick and a fence paling.
They were both taken to hospital for treatment.
The teen was finally able to be removed from the church late on Monday, before he was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, where he remains under police guard.
The bishop and clergyman were also hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
As investigations continue, police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with information or mobile phone vision, to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
