At least 11 children have been injured after a science experiment went horribly wrong at a primary school on Sydney’s northern beaches.

The children are suffering burns following the incident at Manly West Public School around 1pm on Monday.

It’s understood the experiment involved the use of methylated spirits and bicarb soda.

One child has been airlifted by Careflight to Westmead Children’s Hospital with severe burns while a second child was taken to the same hospital by road ambulance.

Five other children were transported to Royal North Shore Hospital with superficial burns.

Four others were taken to Northern Beaches Hospital.

More to come.
