Queensland Police divers have now joined the desperate search for a missing swimmer in Byron Bay.
The man was spotted struggling in the surf about 30m offshore of Main Beach about 5.30pm on Wednesday before vanishing.
A 22-year-old man attempted to rescue him but was overwhelmed by the prevailing conditions.
A major multi-agency search has been underway ever since, but there’s so far been no trace of the swimmer.
Police say personal items have been found on the beach, however there have so far been no missing persons reports so the man’s identity remains a mystery.
The search will enter its third day today with authorities from over the border being called in to help.
“Marine Rescue NSW vessel Brunswick 30 will resume the multi-agency search for a male swimmer at Byron Bay just after 6am,” A Marine Rescue NSW spokesperson said.
“Point Danger 31 will also join the operation and both boats will cover the area that was searched yesterday and extend search legs to the north.
“NSW police divers will join QLD police divers who arrived yesterday afternoon and focused around The Wreck off Main Beach.
“Sonar scans were also conducted along Main Beach and Belongil Beach.”
