UPDATE | A man charged over a horror crash southwest of Sydney that left five teens dead has been refused bail.

Tyrell Edwards, 18, fronted Picton Local Court after being charged with five counts of dangerous driving causing death.

Edwards was allegedly behind the wheel of a Nissan Navara that ploughed into a tree at Buxton on Tuesday night.

He survived the crash, but three girls and two boys aged between 14 and 16 were killed.

The court was told Edwards is ‘significantly traumatised’ and needs psychiatric treatment.

However, Magistrate Mark Douglass refused him bail.

The court also heard Police have obtained video footage of the moments leading up to the crash.

It was also revealed Edwards has had his licence suspended twice before.

He will reappear in court in November.

EARLIER | An 18-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death over a horror crash that killed five teens in NSW.

Police said a Nissan Navara lost control before ploughing into a tree in Buxton, about 40 kilometres north-west of Wollongong, just before 8.00pm on Tuesday.

The driver miraculously managed to survive and was taken to Liverpool Hospital for mandatory testing.

The five passengers, three teenage girls, aged between 14 and 15, and two teenage boys, aged 15 and 16, tragically could not be revived and died at the scene.

Superintendent Paul Fuller described the accident as one of the worst he had ever seen.

“It’s a horrific accident scene and a traumatic event like this will have a devastating impact on the families, friends and the local community,” Supt Fuller said.

A crime scene was established at the crash site and was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit all day on Wednesday.

After undergoing treatment for minor injuries in hospital, the driver was released into the custody of police.

The 18-year-old was taken to Narellan Police Station where he was charged with five counts of dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous.

The Bargo man has been refused bail to appear at Picton Local Court today.
