Police have launched a critical incident investigation after a man was hit and killed by a car following a pursuit in northern NSW overnight.
Officers tried to pull over the man’s vehicle on Centennial Circuit at Byron Bay around 5.40pm on Thursday due to its manner of driving, but he allegedly failed to stop.
“The vehicle continued travelling north along the M1, before road spikes were deployed successfully near Cudgera Creek,” NSW Police said.
“The vehicle slowed down, before the driver exited the vehicle on the M1 at Clothiers Creek and was struck by a passing vehicle”.
Despite desperate attempts by emergency crews, he died at the scene.
The M1 was closed, with local diversions put in place as authorities responded.
All roads have since reopened.
Police say a Critical Incident Investigation Team from Richmond Police District will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
“That investigation will be subject to an independent review and all information will be provided to the Coroner,” police confirmed.
