A major search will resume on Thursday morning for a man who is believed to have gone missing while swimming at Byron Bay.

Two people saw a man struggling in the surf about 30m offshore of Main Beach about 5.30pm on Wednesday.

A 22-year-old man rushed into the water to try and help him but was overwhelmed by the conditions.

Several emergency services were called to the area to start a search for the man but it had to be halted around 8.30pm.

He’s still yet to be found and there are no reports of anyone missing at this stage. However, personal items were found on the beach.

The search will resume at 7am.

Anyone with information about a missing person in the area is urged to contact Byron Bay Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
