UPDATE @ 12.45 PM | Police have confirmed a third person has been found dead in flood-ravaged Lismore.
Just before 11.00am, officers were called to the corner of Uralba and Dawson Streets after reports a man was seen floating in flood waters.
Sadly, upon arrival, the body of a man was located.
He is yet to be formally identified.
“NSW Police can confirm this is the third death associated with the flood crisis in northeast NSW,” police said.
A crime scene has been established, which is currently being processed by specialist forensic officers.
It takes the national death toll from the flood crisis across southeast Queensland and northern NSW to 12.
EARLIER @ 7.00 AM | It has now been confirmed a second person has died in the historic floods in northern New South Wales.
A body was found inside a South Lismore home during the ongoing flood operation yesterday afternoon.
“About 3.30pm yesterday officers attended a home on Casino Street and found the body of a woman aged in her 80s,” NSW Police said.
“She is yet to be formally identified”.
A crime was established at the property, and a report will now be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
It comes after the body of an 86-year-old woman was also discovered inside a home at Lismore yesterday, by a neighbour who had gone to check on her.
The national death toll now stands at 11 after Queensland Police yesterday confirmed a ninth death.
“Police are investigating the death of a man, believed to be a 76-year-old reported missing in flood waters at Glen Esk on Sunday,” Queensland Police said.
“Around 9pm on Sunday a report was received of a vehicle in flood waters on the Brisbane Valley Highway.
“This morning police divers located the submerged vehicle and the deceased man in flood waters at Paddy Gully Creek.”
17 local government areas across northern NSW have now been declared disaster zones.
