A major investigation is underway after a 1-year-old girl was found dead inside a car outside a Sydney childcare centre.

Emergency services were called after the baby was found unresponsive in the vehicle on Marana Road at Earlwood around 5.35pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics desperately tried to save the little girl, but she could not be revived and was declared deceased at the scene.

Police are now trying to piece together the timeline of events that led to the tragedy.

“The information provided to us suggests that this baby was left inside the vehicle for an extended period of time on a very hot day,” Superintendent Christine McDonald said.

“Leaving a child in a vehicle at any time can be dangerous. Leaving a child inside a vehicle for an extended period of time can be deadly”.

A man, who police say is a “close relative” of the baby girl, was taken to hospital in shock.

The baby’s mother is also helping police.

Superintendent McDonald described the incident as “deeply traumatic” and an “absolute tragedy” that’s going to have an impact on the whole community.

“I’m a mother, you can imagine how traumatic, you just, in fact, you can’t even imagine it,” she said.

“So no doubt the parents will be extremely upset.”

Investigations are ongoing.
