An urgent recall has been issued for a popular Hyundai model due to a manufacturing defect that may spark a fire.
All variants of the Hyundai ix35 models sold between 2014-2015 are included in the recall, impacting 19,541 vehicles.
According to The Department of Transport, the defect has a risk of causing serious injury or death.
“Due to a manufacturing defect, the circuit board in the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) module may short circuit when the components are exposed to moisture,” the recall says.
“This could result in a vehicle fire even when the vehicle is turned off,
“A vehicle fire may increase the risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”
The short circuit does not affect the functioning of the brake system.
Affected vehicles should be parked in an open space and away from flammable materials and structures, i.e. not in a garage.
Owners of an impacted Hyundai 1×35 should immediately stop driving the car if it displays an engine warning light.
Hyundai Motor Company Australia will contact affected owners in writing, requesting to make an appointment with their preferred dealership to have the component inspected and rectified, free of charge.
