There’s been a large drop in COVID-19 cases in New South Wales, amid hopes the Omicron surge may have reached its peak in the Southern States.
In the past 24 hours, there has been 15,091 new COVID-19 infections, down from 20,324 the day before.
Of the new cases up to 8pm yesterday, 8,190 were from PCR tests, while 6,901 were from positive rapid tests, with 6,336 of those from tests over the last seven days.
Sadly, the state has also recorded a further 24 deaths.
The total number of people being treated for the virus in hospital now stands at 2,816, with 196 of those in intensive care.
Meantime, Victoria has recorded its lowest daily number of new cases in weeks, with 11,695 new infections today.
The state also recorded a further 17 deaths.
There are now 186,073 active cases across Victoria, with 998 in hospital, including 119 in intensive care.
Medical Expert Doctor Nick Coates said he believes Victoria and New South Wales have now passed their peak.
“I definitely think we have passed the peak, and the reason we can be relatively confident with that, is because it’s replicating exactly what happened around the world,” Dr Coates told TODAY.
“Omicron tends to go up very quickly and then drop very quickly as well.
“Of course, that is good news for Australians going forward.”
