A man has now been charged after allegedly opening fire at Canberra Airport.

The man is alleged to have pulled out a gun in the check-in area of the airport around 1.30pm on Sunday afternoon, firing as many as five shots.

Several of those shots left bullet holes in the windows of the terminal building.

Dozens of people were evacuated from the terminal while others took shelter inside.

The man was taken into custody a short time later without incident.

He has since been charged with discharging a firearm at a building, unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm near a person causing alarm.

The man will front the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday.
