The tinsel is out and the Wishing Tree is back at Kmart stores across the country– all to help spread the joy this Christmas.

In partnership with the Salvation Army, Kmart Australia this week launched its annual Wishing Tree Appeal, to assist families and individuals who are unable to provide gifts this holiday season.

This year marks 35 years of the Appeal, which is Australia’s largest and longest-running gift collection event.

“I think as a community we’re aware that every year there are families in need, and this year even more so,” Salvation Army Gold Coast leader Earle Ivers said.

“We know of the increasing cost of living; as an example, we have 60 families come into the Salvation Army per week for support in some way, and we suspect that need is going to increase.”

The Appeal has collected more than ten million gifts over the past three decades and this year aims to collect 150,000 gifts for those in need.

The community can place a gift under a Wishing Tree in a Kmart store near you, or make a monetary donation.
