Two Gold Coast sailors have woken up on dry land this morning following a dramatic rescue from their stricken yacht off the New South Wales south coast.

The Spirit of Mateship was on its way back to the Gold Coast on Monday afternoon when it suffered mechanical problems and began taking on water.

The pair activated the vessel’s distress beacon approximately 150km offshore from Nowra, but the rescue operation had to be suspended due to wild weather.

Brett, 60, and Lisa, 48, were forced to spend the night in treacherous conditions before finally being rescued from the vessel at first light on Tuesday.

The very grateful duo, who miraculously managed to escape uninjured, admit it feels good to be back on dry land.

“I’m feeling good now, one of the guys made a good coffee and gave us a meat pie, so that helped,” Brett joked.

While Lisa admitted the harrowing 24 hours won’t put her off heading back out on the water.

“I’m going back out Thursday and probably in a couple of days time going back out,” she told reporters.

“Not too far out, might just go out in the Broadwater on the Gold Coast for a little bit”.
