State and territory leaders will be asked to support plans to impose age limits on social media use at a meeting of National Cabinet on Friday.

The plan would make Australia the first country in the world to introduce age restrictions for social media platforms.

Federal cabinet this week endorsed an age limit of 16 which has been backed by Labor MPs.

“I want Australian parents and families to know we’ve got their back,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

“Social media is doing social harm to our young people, and I’m calling time on it.

“We need to do everything we can to keep our kids safe, and wherever I go in Australia, I know one of the biggest issues worrying mums and dads is the impact social media is having on their children’s wellbeing.”

Social media platforms will be expected to enforce the age limit with users to be spared from any penalties.
