The taste of Easter is a delicious hot cross bun filled with spiced goodness and maybe even some choc chips if you’re feeling extra sweet….. but Coles has released a new flavour making most Australians raise their eyebrows.

Coles Special Burger Sauce Hot Cross Buns has been released nationwide today, at $5 for a 4-pack.

The Easter treat is infused with Coles’ burger Sauce, filled with diced pickles and finished off with a layer of tasty cheese on top.

You’d be forgiven for thinking this is an April Fool joke, but alas, it is all true.

The supermarket giant released the savoury bun off the back off the Vegemite hot cross bun last year, which was a huge success according to Coles.

“Each year we try to tap into new flavour trends to give customers a fun, modern twist on a hot cross bun, such as our new Coles Special Burger Sauce Hot Cross Buns. Based on the phenomenal success of our limited-edition VEGEMITE hot cross buns, savoury hot cross buns are the new craze,” she says.

“Our amazing bakery team have spent months fine-tuning and taste-testing these new hot cross buns to ensure the flavour is just right, and we’re confident our customers will love them just as much as they enjoy our traditional range of delicious buns.”

For those wanting something new and exciting – but not quite as controversial as the burger sauce flavour – Coles has also released two new sweet flavours.

Red Velvet and Carrot Cake flavoured hot cross buns will be hopping into stores from Monday 13 February.
