Gold Coast Olympic champion Logan Martin has been the victim of an alleged smash-and-grab robbery in Belgium.

The BMX star took to Instagram overnight to reveal his team’s van had been targeted by thieves who smashed their way into the vehicle while it was parked on the street.

Fortunately, the 30-year-old’s bikes were in his accommodation, but a number of personal items including his wallet, gloves, and helmet were all stolen.

“Our van got broken into last night – luckily my bikes weren’t in there,” Martin said in the video.

“Luckily most of our stuff was in our room and we managed to recover a lot of it too.

“I lost my wallet, backpack and a few other things but overall it didn’t end up being too bad.

“It’s unfortunate when people feel the need to do things like this… What a crazy start to the trip.”

The team managed to recover some of the gear after finding it dumped in a park thanks to a GPS tracking device.

“Thank God for bag tags – we found our bags,” Martin said.

The frightening robbery comes just days before Martin looks to defend his BMX gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

It’s understood the team is now working to replace his helmets and boots, but Australia’s chef de mission Anna Meares said they’re just grateful his bikes are safe.

“It was unfortunate that the car was broken into… What we do know is that Logan’s bikes are ok,” she said.

“As you can appreciate, having sporting equipment, you potentially lose it this close to a competition can be quite stressful, but his bikes are fine.”
