A man has been charged after he allegedly used inside information to bet on the winners of five Australian of the Year awards.
According to Federal Police, the 47-year-old from Sydney allegedly used information from a Commonwealth employee to place a series of bets on the awards between 2017 and 2021.
He allegedly made $7542 from $1767 worth of bets.
An investigation was sparked after the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission noticed betting irregularities in the 2021 awards, leading to the man’s arrest.
He’s been charged with six counts of using inside information for betting purposes, which carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.
Investigations into the matter continue, as the man prepares to front Downing Centre Court today.
