A worker has suffered significant head injuries in a nasty accident on a construction site in Coolangatta.

The man, aged in his 60s, fell around 4.5 metres after being struck by a concrete hose at a site along Garrick Street around 11am on Thursday.

He landed in the work pit below, with fire crews called in to help rescue the man using a caged crane.

He was then treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
