A woman is fighting for life after a horror crash on the Pacific Motorway that shut down the M1 for several hours.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said initial investigations suggest a ute was headed southbound on the Smith Street on-ramp around 7.30pm on Tuesday when it slowed to merge into traffic.

According to the spokesperson, the yellow sedan then slammed into the back of the ute “at speed”.

The passenger in the sedan, a 32-year-old Nerang woman, was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition this morning.

There’s reports the car had an unsecured engine in the back which hit the passenger in the back of the head, causing significant head and chest injuries.

The driver of the sedan, a 34-year-old Nerang man, was also transported to hospital in a serious condition with limb  injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
