A woman has spent the night in the Southport Watchhouse after allegedly setting a Beenleigh unit on fire.
Police were called to a complex along Main Street just before 10pm on Monday, where they found the apartment fully engulfed in flames.
The 32-year-old male resident of the unit was not inside the property at the time so wasn’t hurt, however, police were forced to evacuate around 20 other residents from the complex.
Fortunately, fire crews were able to stop the flames from spreading to neighbouring units, however, the unit that was set alight was completely destroyed.
A 24-year-old woman was found nearby and taken into custody.
She was transported to the Southport Watchhouse, where she has since been charged with one count of arson.
The woman will appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court today via video link.
As investigations continue, police are appealing to anyone who may have CCTV footage from Main Street, or who may have witnessed the fire, to come forward.
It’s believed the man and woman are known to each other.
