A brand new festival celebrating surf film and photography will wash over the Southern Gold Coast from 1-8 May.
The inaugural Flotsam Festival features a sea-inspired program of events, including short film premieres, photographic exhibitions, movie screenings, workshops and more.
“The Flotsam Festival is a celebration of the surfing history and culture of the southern Gold Coast, particularly the Coolangatta foreshore,” Curator Tim Baker told myGC.
Mr Baker said one of the highlights of the event will be the Flotsam: Focal Point exhibition.
“It’s basically a photo exhibition outdoors, stretched along the coast from Kirra to Point Danger. You can go on guided coastal walks and look at these magnificent photos from the vantage points that they were taken,” he said.
Over thirty high caliber artists will have their work showcased throughout the festival, including Peter ‘Joli’ Wilson, one of surf photography’s most recognised figures.
“The southern end of the Gold Coast is unique in the world. I’ve travelled for 40 years photographing surfing and I don’t think there is another area in the world that is like it. Kirra Hill is a really special place. It’s got the waves around it, beautiful vistas and it’s the perfect place to showcase our work. It’s unreal,” Joli told myGC.
