A young woman has survived a terrifying ordeal after becoming lost amongst mangroves in Helensvale.

The 20-year-old had been camping with friends when she wandered from the boat she was staying on at around midnight on Tuesday, October 3 near Dalley Park Drive.

She managed to call the police for help after getting lost in the pitch-black darkness.

She had attempted to traverse the thick-mud in an attempt to find land but had no luck.

“An officer from Coomera conducted a foot search, navigating his way through approximately 200 metres of knee-deep, and at times waist-deep, mud and thick scrub for almost an hour to locate the woman,” a QPS statement reads.

“The area she was found was incredibly isolated with zero visibility.”

The officer then used the sound of a horn from a Police vehicle to assist in escorting the woman back through the mud, at times needing to carry her, to safety.
