Gold Coast Airport’s $260 million terminal expansion has officially opened its doors to passengers.
After three years of construction, the three-level terminal has been a much-anticipated addition to the city for both locals and tourists.
The 30,000 square-meter expansion effectively doubles the capacity of the busy airport, allowing it to cater for more domestic and international arrivals.
“This is a game changer for the Gold Coast. Not just for the airport, but for the Gold Coast as a city,” Queensland Airports Limited COO Marion Charlton said.
“We are the first and last impression that our visitors have when they enter and leave our gorgeous city and now we have an airport that reflects that beautiful destination itself.”
The expansion includes four glass aerobridges, additional retail spaces and new boarding facilities, as well as sprawling views over the Gold Coast hinterland.
From next month, those flying direct to the Gold Coast from New Zealand, Singapore and Japan will arrive via the terminal expansion and in March 2023, it will welcome passengers from Bali.
Gold Coast Airport CEO Amelia Evans said the airport expansion is also essential to meeting the anticipated growth in services in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympics.
“The new terminal provides an opportunity for us to continue our growth because it gives us the space that we need to better connect our region to the world,” she said.
The new terminal design reflects the nearby natural environment on both sides of the Queensland and New South Wales border with hinterland greens and bronze to the building’s west and bright coastal blues and mint greens to the east.
