A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a Gold Coast shopping centre security guard while trying to steal a trolley full of groceries.

The 31-year-old allegedly tried to carry out the theft at a shopping centre on Scarborough Street in Southport just before 9pm on Tuesday.

However, he was busted by security, with police alleging the man assaulted the guard before running off into parkland where he attempted to escape by swimming into the Broadwater.

Water police were hot on his heels and took the man into custody a short time later.

The Parkwood man has since been charged with one count each of enter premises and commit, serious assault person over 60 and stealing.

He was refused police bail and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court today.

The security guard involved was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he was treated for facial injuries.
