Police have confirmed a pedestrian accident in Southport that left a man seriously injured is not being treated as a hit and run.

A man in his 50s was struck by a car on Marine Parade near Nerang St at around 6.20pm on Tuesday night.

He suffered head and neck injuries along with a numerous lacerations and bruises and was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Police had initially reported on Wednesday morning that officers were still trying to locate the vehicle and driver involved.

But they’ve since confirmed Police spoke with the driver at the time of the accident.

“The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, so it wasn’t hit and run, (to) engage with police, discuss what happened,” Acting Superintendent Craig Knowles said.

“We’ve got CCTV footage that shows that the driver of the vehicle had a green light and the pedestrians walked out in front of him.

“At this point in time, the investigations have concluded, as far as we’re concerned, at this point in time, with no offences being identified.”

Police say the pedestrian lights where the accident occurred is notorious for people ignoring traffic signals.

They’re urging people to take care, especially with plenty of people around during the school holidays.

“It is the main thoroughfare from the CBD of Southport into the Broadwater Parklands and back. So quite a number of people use that thoroughfare but it’s also a heavily frequented area for traffic being part of the Gold Coast Highway.

“So we’d caution people around crossing the street against red lights because unfortunately, these sorts of incidents can happen. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious this time, but it can certainly lead to the death of people.”
