UPDATE | Police have now charged a man over an alleged assault at a Gold Coast tram station.

A verbal altercation broke out between a man and a group of males at the Cavill Ave stop in Surfers Paradise just before 3am on Tuesday morning.

A 34-year-old man was allegedly assaulted, causing him to fall to the ground.

Police intervened, however, the alleged attacker left the scene.

He was spotted by officers a short time later, chasing the man on foot before eventually arresting him on Ferny Ave.

The 21-year-old Upper Coomera man has been charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, obstruct police.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on May 8.

A 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old are assisting Police with enquiries with investigations continuing.

The alleged victim was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition with chest and head injuries.

The trio allegedly assaulted a 34-year-old man just before 3am at the Cavill Avenue stop.

The gang fled the fight when police rushed over to intervene – but they didn’t get very far and were all arrested nearby.

The victim was left with chest and head injuries and was rushed to the Gold Coast University hospital.

He is in a serious but stable condition.

Charges are expected to be laid on the three men later this morning.

It’s not yet known what sparked the brawl, with investigations continuing.
