UPDATE | Police have charged an 18-year-old male and a 14-year-old boy over a botched house break-in that saw a man allegedly run over by a stolen car that fled the scene.
The owner of the Lakeview Boulevard home at Mermaid Waters was alerted to the break-in by a security app on his phone just after 1.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.
The man, who was working on a nearby building site, rushed to the home, using a work ute to box in a stolen Hyundai Tuscon waiting on the street.
The owner was allegedly threatened with a knife after confronting two males attempting to break into the property.
The Hyundai then drove off but struck the man’s stepfather who had also arrived at the home.
The 72-year-old was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition with significant leg injuries.
The two males who allegedly tried to break into the home attempted to escape on foot but were quickly rounded up by the dog squad.
Nine News reports one of the boys was laughing as he was bundled into a paddy wagon and bragging about his affiliation with the Southside gang.
An 18-year-old Surfers Paradise man has been charged with robbery armed/in company, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and possessing a knife in public.
He will front Southport Magistrates Court today.
A 14-year-old Bundall boy has been charged with robbery armed/in company and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
He is expected to face Southport Childrens Court.
Police are still searching for the stolen Hyundai and the female behind the wheel.
The vehicle with Queensland registration 874YWU was allegedly stolen from a Robina address on Tuesday morning.
EARLIER by Shanee Dobeson| Two teenagers have been arrested following a botched break-in at a home in Mermaid Waters this afternoon, which saw a man run over by a stolen getaway car.
Police were called to a house along Lakeview Boulevard just after 1.30pm, following reports residents had caught two males, one armed with a knife, breaking into a property.
A white vehicle was also seen waiting outside the home, with a good samaritan allegedly run over by the car as it fled the scene.
The 72-year-old man was treated by paramedics, before being taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition with significant leg injuries.
A Queensland Police spokesperson confirmed to myGC that a female is believed to have been driving the white 2018 Hyundai Tucson bearing registration plates “874YWU”.
The vehicle, which was stolen from a home in Robina around 8.30am this morning, remains at large.
The two males were taken into custody by police at the scene.
Charges are yet to be laid as investigations continue.
