Two people have died after crashing a stolen motorbike at Helensvale.
Police patrolling the area spotted the motorbike speeding on Discovery Dr around 1.30am on Saturday.
Officers activated their lights and siren but the bike accelerated away.
Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman says officers then ‘disengaged’ and stopped trying to intercept the motorcycle.
“Shortly after police drove across a motorcycle that had collided with a pole near the intersection of Siganto Drive at Helensvale and unfortunately, a 36-year-old male and a 35-year-old female have been found deceased at the scene,” Acting Chief Supt Wildman said.
Police are investigating whether another vehicle may have been involved in the accident.
Officers have seized a ute which will be forensically examined, while a 50-year-old man is assisting Police with inquiries.
He has since been charged with high range drink-driving after allegedly blowing 0.217, driving unlicensed and driving without prescribed interlock device.
The man has been granted bail to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on December 9.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the accident with oversight by the Ethical Standards Command.
Superintendent Wildman has confirmed the motorcycle had been stolen from an address on Brisbane Rd in Biggera Waters on October 11.
“We’ve had a couple of sightings in relation to that motorcycle in recent times, however, have had no cause to intercept the motorcycle previously.
“The registration plates attached to the motorcycle did not match the motorcycle itself.”
