Transport bosses have cancelled plans to shut down the Gold Coast tram line on State of Origin night.

Trams were set to grind to a halt from 8.30pm on Wednesday night to allow for the delivery of another new tram as part of Light Rail Stage 3.

That would have forced commuters onto replacements buses, including those returning from Origin in Brisbane and those watching the game at pubs and clubs across the Gold Coast.

Following enquiries from myGC about the decision to cancel trams on Origin night, Translink has confirmed the planned shutdown has now been put on hold.

“We know how much State of Origin means to Queenslanders and we want to ensure as many people as possible are utilising public transport on the night, whether that be travelling to the game or to events across the Gold Coast,” a Translink spokesperson told myGC.

“With this in mind, Translink has rescheduled the delivery of the new light rail vehicles, which was originally planned for Origin night. The G:link will run as per normal on Wednesday evening on the Gold Coast.”

“The arrival time for new light rail vehicles in Australia is dependent on shipping arrival schedules and connecting transport itineraries to deliver the new tram directly from the Port of Brisbane to the Gold Coast tram depot at Southport.
