Shocking new figures have revealed how many drivers have been caught not wearing a seatbelt or using their phone by the State’s new hi-tech camera technology.
Over 13,000 drivers across the Gold Coast and Logan region have been busted since the cameras were implemented in November last year.
Of these more than 8,000 drivers were caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel, while almost 3,000 drivers and 2,000 passengers were snapped not wearing their seatbelts.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the figures are completely unacceptable.
“These people have a clear lack of regard for themselves and those around them,” Minister Bailey said.
“It’s time unsafe drivers in Queensland realise it is only a matter of time until they’re caught and fined heavily for driving distracted or not wearing a seat belt.”
The hi-tech cameras can pop up anywhere, anytime, across regional and urban areas of Queensland.
Figures across the state showed a total of 37,594 people caught flouting the rules.
Minister Bailey claims using a mobile phone when driving is the equivalent of getting behind the wheel well over the limit with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.07 – 0.10.
Queensland drivers who are caught using a mobile phone are penalised over $1,000 and four demerit points, while people failing to wear a seatbelt will cop a $400 fine and lose 3 demerit points.
“These tough penalties hit offenders where it hurts – their wallet,” Minister Bailey said.
“It’s simple. If you don’t want a fine, don’t break the rules.”
